Ford Capri

Ford Capri

Greater Manchester Police owned this plate and 20 others (D431 to D450 KVM) all put on a fleet of iconic Ford Capri 2.8i Specials.

When Ford introduced the Capri in 1969, and put the 3.0 V6 engine in, quite a few police forces sat up and took notice. Here was a car that offered great performance, for a low price. One of those forces, was the Manchester and Salford police, who after evaluating one, ordered a batch of 3.0GT models that were delivered in 1971. The partnership lasted well into GMP’s reign, and only ended some 20 years later when the last one’s were withdrawn from service.

Having moved onto the Mk2 and Mk3 3.0S models, the 2.8i was taken into service in 1982. The final batch of 20 Capri’s ordered by GMP, were 2.8i Special models, of which The Capri's were replaced by Sierra 2.9i 4x4, and Sierra Cosworth 4x4 cars. GMP had only one other vehicle that was as iconic as the Capri, and that was the Range Rover, which managed an incredible 30 years service, also starting in 1971.
